The ideals that continue to live long after they killed a man!

Address by Comrade Malusi Gigaba, ANC NEC Member, on the occasion of the Chris Hani Memorial Lecture in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, on 10 April 2017

It is with a great sense nervousness and profound privilege that I accepted the invitation to speak here tonight at the Chris Hani Memorial Lecture.

Immediately, I was reminded of The Funeral Oration of Pericles, in 431 BC, where he said:

“I could have wished that the reputations of many brave men were not to be imperilled in the mouth of a single individual, to stand or fall accordingly as he spoke well or ill.”

Indeed, my mind could not escape this immense fact that in accepting to do this talk I had accepted the heavy responsibility to talk of a man in whose footsteps I always wonder if I am worthy to walk or about whose name I may not even be worthy to talk! Continue reading

Speech by the Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba MP, during the VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE Debate in the National Assembly on 10 November 2016

Here we are again for a 05th frivolous attempt by the opposition since 2014 to win by stealth and cunning battles they had lost on the ground.

What makes a mockery of this are the reasons provided for this new gimmick.

The so-called “state capture” has become the most recent Trojan horse inside which the DA Spartans have hid in their new spurious attempt to waylay democracy. Continue reading

Address by the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Malusi Gigaba MP, on the occasion of Budget Vote 5 at the Extended Public Committee on Home Affairs in Cape Town on 22 April 2016 (Full text)

Chairperson,
Ministers and Deputy Ministers,
Honourable Members,
Distinguished Guests:

It is with a profound sense of responsibility that I stand before you to table our Budget Vote for the 2016 / 2017 Financial Year.

We know the duty we owe to our people to lead them along a path that leads to a majestic but attainable future, to be tireless, ethical and innovative to deliver quality services in a manner that is convenient and enduring.

The notion that government is boring and how we deliver services is itself devoid of innovation and new ideas is being negated in practice in this Department that many people once resented visiting.  Continue reading

Anti-racism and social prejudice – advancing our collective efforts to build a united, non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa

Address by Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Malusi Gigaba, during the debate against racism in the National Council of Provinces on 25 February 2016

The first-ever Pan African Congress held in London, in the year 1900, which brought together Africans from the African Continent, the United States and the Caribbean, made the clarion call:

The problem of the 20th Century is the problem of the colour line! Indeed, those prophetic words were to come to pass, as the twentieth century dismally failed to solve the problem of the colour line!

We are here today engaged in this debate precisely because of the debt we owe to the ages to solve the problem of the colour line. From the outset, let us make the firm point that the colonisation of South Africa, as that of the other colonies, and the emergence of racism as a global problem, had been spawned by the emergence and spread of capitalism as a global system. Wealth tax for education #FeesMustFall – a perspective by Malusi Gigaba

Over the past few weeks, starting at Wits University and spreading like wild fire to other universities across the country, SA students have been locked into a bitter struggle against their universities over exorbitant, above-inflation and unreasonable fee increases. University councils and administrations hide behind institutional autonomy both to swindle parents and students through unregulated fee increases as well as to reject government intervention to regulate the fees across the board in order to make higher education both affordable and accessible. Honourable Chairperson,

INTRODUCTION

In the 60th year since the adoption of the Freedom Charter, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) remains committed to realizing the historic aspirations of the people of South Africa.

We believe that our work is a critical enabler for all of the declarations in the Freedom Charter, for it is our department that ensures the status of each South African is recognized, enabling them fully to exercise their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Continue reading
