  • Mr Gigaba is the Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Africa since 31 March 2017

  • Patron of the OASIS for Hope Hospice

Academic Profile

  • Mr Gigaba Matriculated at Vryheid State High School in 1988
  • He holds a Bachelor of Pedagogics in Education from University of Durban-Westville (UDW) during the period 1989 and 1990 and;
  • a Master of Arts Degree in Social Policy from UDW during the period 1992 to 1994.
  •  Mr Gigaba presented a paper at The First International Geography Conference, 10 – 14 July 1995 at the University of Durban-Westville entitled: “Land invasions during political transition: the Wiggins saga in Cato Manor” 1995.
  • In 1997 he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by University of Durban-Westville’s Faculty of Education for Outstanding achievements and Contribution to faculty and society and;
  • the Cuban National University Students Federation awarded him the highest medal awarded to students and youth leaders in Cuba, the Jose Antonio Echeverrias Medal at the University of Havana’s Aula Matta in 2002.
  • He was appointed as ministerial representative to the Council of the University of Potchefstroom by former Minister of Education, Prof Kader Asmal in 2001.

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

  • Mr Gigaba became active in various students and youth organisations, such as Congress of South African Students (COSAS), the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO), the South African Student Congress (SASCO) and Young Christian Students (YCS) during the period 1985 to 1993
  • He was also a member of the Geography Students Society, UDW between 1989 and 1991.
  • He joined the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the ANCYL in 1990 and he was one of the founding members of the Education Students Society at the University of Durban-Westville in 1992, he was Chairperson of SASCO at UDW in 1993.
  • Mr Gigaba worked as an Office-Assistant at the Public Affairs Department, University of Durban-Westville in 1993 and;
  • was the Chairperson of the ANCYL, Southern KwaZulu-Natal and later Provincial Secretary in 1994.
  • He was the KZN Provincial Secretary of ANCYL and ex-officio of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the ANC during the period 1994 to 1996.
  • He was a convenor of the KZN Provincial Education Forum and a President of the ANCYL during the period 1994 to 2004 and a member of the ANC’s National Deployment Committee and also a Chairperson of the ANCYL’s Political Committee and National Economic Development Commission (NEDC).
  • He became a member of Parliament for the ANC in 1999 and during that period he also served as a member of the Trade and Industry Portfolio Committee; Joint Monitoring Committee on the Quality of Life and Status of Children, Youth and Disabled Persons; and as member of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Land Affairs (Alternate member).
  • Mr Gigaba served as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of South Africa between June 2004 and October 2010.
  • He also served as the Minister of Public Enterprises from November 2010 to May 2014.
  • He was the Minister of Home Affairs between May 2014 and March 2017.
